Making People Healthy

  • But my kids won't eat it!

Last night my husband and I had dinner with another couple. We got onto the topic of nutrition which is easy when you are talking to me, because I could talk about it all day long! She is an Elementary school teacher and we were talking about how poorly the average child eats. She brought up one child in particular who has a developmental delay and also has to fight the fact his mom has total disregard for what is a healthy meal for her son. She actually allows her kindergarten to pack his own lunch! Which obviously consists of chips, cookies, juice and crackers. This is affecting his academic progress in the classroom as well as his behavior. This diet is terrible for any child let alone someone with autism. I am sure many of you would love to spend some time educating this mother as it just makes your heart ache that there is a child out their being poisoned by an ill-informed mom who unfortunately is not getting the right information or tools on how to feed her son. I know as parents we want our kids to be happy and well feed. But cookies and crackers while it may make them happy in the short term could cause major issues and distress down the road. And we can all agree empty calories does not mean a child is well feed. In fact it is probably more dangerous for them to eat it. With this month's topic being on Parenting Styles, I just want to remind mom's that is OUR RESPONSIBILITY to ensure our kids are nourishing their bodies. They are young and have no idea why or how to eat healthy nor do they have the aptitude to find out the information. It is our job as their protectors to educate ourselves in this area and supply the food for them. Dr. Sear's has a great books and tips on how to feed picky eaters. But we have to ensure the food choices they have are safe and nutritious. Sure give them choices, but we should pick what they have to choose from. Example: "Would you like an apple or a pear?" This may be a little strong for some of you, but I really do feel that feeding kids a diet full of chemicals and non-nutritive food is just as malice as not feeding them. The end result could potentially be the same thing. So food for thought on Parenting Styles is to make sure as parents we are bringing healthy menu options for our little ones. It could be a battle at times, but we didn't become parents because it was an easy thing to do. We became parents because we wanted to raise happy and healthy children and give them every opportunity we could.
  • Looking for Safe Sunscreens?

At a recent trip to the beach with other mommy friends we were all discussing the safest and best sunscreens for ourselves and our little ones. It is hard to simply pick one based on the label as most have very lenghty ingredient lists and chemicals that we aren't sure what they are or do. And then it was like someone was listening because a friend of mine in attendance came across the Environmental Working Group. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) had just released the first-ever, in-depth analysis of the safety and effectiveness of more than 700 name-brand sunscreens. Their new database lists products that offer the best combination of safety and effectiveness: they are formulated with the safest chemicals, are most effective at protecting against sunburn, and help prevent long-term damage caused by the sun’s UVA rays, which are linked to skin aging, wrinkling and, potentially, cancer. Hooray!!! Sadly, the analysis found that 84 percent of 785 sunscreen products with an SPF rating of 15 or higher offer inadequate protection from the sun’s harmful rays, or contain ingredients with safety concerns. This is one of the reasons I had always been so leery of slathering sunscreen on my kids. I was opting for SPF clothes which is fine for the baby and toddler, but for my 5 year old she is not so happy about looking like a comical tourist in head to toe sun protection garb. Ironically, some popular sunscreen chemicals break down when exposed to sunlight and must be formulated with stabilizing chemicals! So those would be a complete waste of money and the time it would take to apply. Others penetrate the skin and present significant health concerns, which scare me and probably most moms. Chemicals like oxybenzone are endocrine disrupters. So I personally stay away from "chemical" sunscreens. This very welcomed and much needed research is based on nearly 400 peer-reviewed studies of the 17 sunscreen chemicals approved for use in the U.S., an analysis of sunscreen ingredient toxicity linked to 60 industry and government databases on chemical hazards, coupled with customized, product-by-product assessments of protection from both UVA and UVB radiation. So now moms we have research and third party validation on which products are effective AND safe! • What do you Feed your kids?

I get that question a lot.  So I figured I would post my usual answer.  A lot of people think I spend hours in the kitchen or that I am a master chef.  I do think I cook well, but I really feel it is the ingredients I use that make the dish.  I always try to use organic and fresh, but it doesn't always work out.  I was at a Pampered Chef party and I thought it was really cute how the presenter went around the room and asked the ladies what type of cook we were.  A "Martha", a "Betty", etc.  I am part pre-made and part chef.  I love our local organic grocery store because I can get some things already half done and I just finish it off.

Okay, so back to our usual meals.  We are a really busy family so all of our meals are usually made quickly and on the fly because I have a one year old who I can only put down for 5 minutes at a time.  So cutting and standing at the stove is tough.

Generally for breakfast my kids love oatmeal (the slow cook type).  I cook in water and then add some Vanilla Almond Milk and butter.  They love berries so I usually put out frozen berries or I make them a fruit smoothie.  Great Harvest also has some wonderful whole grain breads that we will do as well.  Toasted with butter.  Scrambled Eggs and I do spend the extra money on the better eggs.  Watch Food, Inc. and you will too!  I'll make pancakes too some mornings and there are a great selection of healthy pancake mixes now.  Stay away from the ones that have Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable oil or too little fiber and protein.  They always have some type of fruit (banana, pear, apple, cantaloupe, strawberry, blueberry, rasberry, kiwi).  They'll also sometimes drink some Keifer or have some organic yogurt.

For lunch I usually put out about 4 or 5 of the following depending on what they had for breakfast and their snack: Avocados, cucumbers, red bell peppers, carrots, grapes, tomatoes, apples, pears, salmon, grilled chicken breast, natural chicken sausage (nitrite free), Amy's Pizza pockets, Natural/organic cheese pizza, whole wheat pasta, sesame seed butter in a tortilla wrap, chick peas, organic yogurt, celery with peanut butter or cream cheese, raw milk cheese slices, bagel with cream cheee, stuffed grape leaves, mandarin oranges.

For dinner it generally consists of 4 or 5 of some of the same things that fall under lunch I'll do for dinner if we didn't eat them for lunch as well as: organic rice (my kids really like Jasmine though I would prefer if they ate the brown rice), spaghetti with whole wheat noodles and organic pasta sauce, broccoli, peas, green beans, watermelon, Amy's Mac and Cheese, leafy green salad, Crossiants from Trader Joe's or these awesome buscuits by Meeting Street, buffalo meat meatballs, zucchini, asparagus, olives, gnocci, eggplant parm or chicken parm, veggie lasgna.

My kids are 5, 3, and 1 and have never had soda, Kool-Aide (at least not to my knowledge), a fast food hamburger, Hostess type treat, krispie creme type treat.  I have bought all natural deserts from our Earthfare so they are not deprived, but I just can't let them have the other brands.  I am not perfect and unfortunately neither is our diet, but I can control the items I buy and bring into or home.  It is also a nice money saver.

I try to give them choices of what they would like at that moment.  I pick the choices, but they get to decide between the options.  My kids like the variety and variety is good for us.  As you can see it is really simple stuff.  I cook a bit more for my husband and myself, but for the kids (and for me when my hubby is traveling) we eat pretty much raw foods and they are pretty simple.   They love this stuff and I feel as though they are really getting a nice variety of fruits and vegetables everyday.  If you can adhere to a 90/10 rule which is 90% plant based diet and 10% meat/fish/dairy diet you are pretty much doing what most diet experts tout as optimal.

Dr Sears has some great books out on feeding children well and some great tips on how to get them to eat some of the foods you want them too.  www.askdrsears.com

Hope you find some food ideas!

  • A Simple Novel Concept

Who would have thought nutrition would be a novel concept?  There is no health problem that can't be helped with better nutrition.  We may not always be able to 100% treat or prevent disease or aging from happening, but there is no doubt that nutritional excellence can help our bodies against anything out there.  Sometimes we take our good health and wonderous bodies for granted.  We will go get our hair and nails done but won't take care of our hair and nails from the inside.  Maybe some of us blame lack of time or money, but can you really put a price on good health?  And for those that argue it is too time consuming to eat well, this quote may make you rethink that sentiment.  "If your lifestyle does not control your body, eventually your body will control your lifestyle." Em Baxter www.nutripoints.com

  • Great Quote

"if we do not take time to be healthy, will willhave to take time to be sick." Dr Dwayne Dyer

If you could see inside your body and inside your cells and see how wonderfully made you are the more you'd want to take care of yourself and your family.

    Live well ladies!

  • It's not just about Prevention it is about Protection

Prevention has been a big buzz word in the Wellness Industry.  There is even a magazine with the name.  Well, I found a new great word I have been using with my clients. I recently heard a Family Pracitce Physician speak and she gave a powerful lecture on how she is educating her patients on a new perspective...PROCTECTION.  It really rang home for me to.  The foods we eat, the products we use, the steps we take, should all be centered on protecting our boides.  When I changed my mental frame of reference on protecting my body it seemed like I was the one in control.  Prevention seems like we are playing defense and seems more  subdue.  Protection gives me more of the notion that we are on the offense and are the one in charge of our bodies.  We are strong and have the power to protect ourselves against disease and aging.   Let's face it from womb to tomb, there are things that attack our bodies with every breath we take.

We have 20 Trillion cells in our bodies and every day each cell takes about 10,000 hits from free radicals (those destructive little gubbers that cause our cells to become damaged or die).  Free radicals are a biproduct of good things like exercise and eating as well as bad things like pollutants we breath, toxins we ingest,  Antioxidants offer our cells the protection they need to help fight off those free radicals.  If there are not enough antioxidants in our bodies to bond and neutralize the free radicals they go after our cells and damage them.  Antioxidants come from eating fruits and vegetables.  So one of the best things we can do to protect our bodies is eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables.  And remember the RDA for fruits and vegetables is 9 to 11 minimum for women. For children the RDA is between 5-9 depending on their age and gender.

So ladies, are you proctected?  Is your body prepared to fight disease and aging?  If not or you aren't sure maybe consider what more you can do.

  • A whole New Frontier...Epigenetics

I was once working in the new frontier of science called genomics.  It was neat to be working in a field that was considered cutting edge and a whole new field of vast importance.  Well, now there is a new frontier emerging with equal interest and equal promise of providing new understanding and explanations for our inner functioning.  It is the field of epigenetics.  TIME magazine just came out with a great article on it last week.

The cover story in TIME magazine last week is entitled “Why Your DNA Isn’t Your Destiny” (HERE) by John Cloud.  I was amazed at what a great job the writer did with a very complicated subject. Furthermore, I was actually giddy with excitement.  This is a lot of the concepts I try to explain to people and now there is a whole field of study being devoted to it!

I am somebody who believes in genetics and evolution as two important matters, not just in the great span of time, but also in our individual lives.  Before I get into the subject of epigenetics let me give you a little background on evolution in general and genetics in particular.

In the 150 years since Darwin published On the Origin of Species the controlling belief was that your genes were your destiny.  The good genes conveyed a survival advantage that would persist over time, while those that didn’t would be weeded out...survival of the fittest.  Today, the novice or unenlightened simplify this concecpt and believe could pretty much do whatever you wanted to yourself, drink or smoke, eat processed, fast food, foods full of preservatives, dyes, and trans fats, but it wouldn't maater because your life span and the diseases that you would suffer from would simply happen because of your genes not your habits.  And furthermore, when your kids were born they got a blank slate when it came to their genetics.  The sins, health habits or environmental exposures of the parent did not pass onto the children.  I think we have all seen that email in our inboxes come through.  You know the one where they make the comet when we were kids we ate dirt and our mothers smoked and drank when they were pregnant and hey look we are alive aren't we?

Well, finally a new emerging field of research is shedding light on this misconceived notion that our genes are our destiny and the way we conduct ourselves and the environment we create within our bodies has no baring on how are genes play out.  Can I tell you how excited I am!  So everyone check it out.  You will thank you for learning more on this important topic, your kids will thank you and your grandkids!

So remember everyone, what you and your kids do and eat today does effect how you feel, act, and look tomorrow and it can even effect future generations to come!

  • Not exactly nutrition, but helped my Mental Health!

After a couple of months of holiday fun and travels, we toke our last trip for a couple of weeks.  It was wonderful to finally soak up some sunshine after some frigid weeks.  The family and I went down to Florida for some Wellness Workshops I was giving and to visit some friends.  We flew AirTran as the fares were fantastic.  Well, I had to fly there and home without my husband as we had conflicting work schedules.   And on the way home I had all three kids to manage by myself.  I have to say, I was so surprised how much help I received from the gate agents, the ticket agents, flight attendents and the pilots.  Everyone was wondeful.  I was blown away!  I travel all the time and luckily through my work, I generally can bring my kids with me.  Often times, that means I am traveling alone with them for a least a leg of the journey.  And I have never had the help as this airline gave me.  I wanted to post this because usually, managing all the bags, kids, spills, strollers, etc that goes into traveling with the kids raises my stress level and obviously that is not good for anyone (including the kids).  So, next time you find yourself traveling with the family do yourself and your mental health a favor and fly AirTran!  I hope you have the same wonderful experience as I did!

    Happy Travels!

  • To H1N1 Vaccinate or not

While this is a personal and contraversal decision I think it is also overlooking an important aspect of staying healthy this flu season and during this pandemic of swine flu.  While vaccinations have been praised for keeping epidemics of yester year at bay and curtailing certain childhood illnesses, they are not a magic bullet.  What I advocate and try to instill in our household is keeping our immune system strong and healthy so it can do the job it was designed to do which is fight disease!  We have an amazing system of checks and balances and a system that you could never mimmick in a lab.  Our immune system is so complex and masterful it should be marveled.  Unfortunately, for many it does not function properly.  So, while you might be mulling over to vaccinate or not (which I do think you should seriously study and make an informed decision on), remember to do everything in your power to keep your immune system strong.  Eat as many fruits, vegetables, berries, whole grains as possilbe, sleep, exercise, and take time everyday to relax and laugh. Breastfeeding is one of the very best things we can do for our smaller children.  So, if that is an option for you, seriously consider breastfeeding for at least that first year.  It not only is the healthier choice for you, but for your precious baby.

While the media may make us feel like we don't have any control over our health, remember we do.  It is in our power to feed our bodies well so it can keep our immune system running strong.  "There's no question the immune system fundamentally is influenced by overall health -- and a balanced diet is key," says David Katz, M.D., M.P.H., director of the Yale Prevention Research Center in New Haven, Connecticut. "Not only are essential nutrients critical for the production and maintenance of key germ-fighting cells in the immune system, but a balanced diet also has a strong effect on vascular function, and the immune system is dependent on blood flow," Katz says. The bloodstream is the route along which infection-fighting cells travel throughout the body to where they're needed.

    Terri's Tips:

    1.  Eat at least one type of berry everday.  Frozen berries can be a less expensive and easier option.  Berries are chalk full of antioxidants.  They are truely a super food.

    2.  Eat two fruits and two vegetables with every meal.  This will not only cut down on our hunger and stomach space for less healthy alternatives, it will ensure we are hitting our daily requirement for servings of fruits and vegetables.

    3.  Play and laugh with your kids.  Laughing releases good hormones that promote a healthy immune system.  Plus, it can help burn calories as we roll around or run after them!

    4.  Sleep.  Put away that lap top and get to bed!

  • Safe Toys this Holiday Season!

    Many Toys Contain Dangerous Chemicals

Tests on 1,200 children’s items revealed that more than one-third contained lead and other potentially dangerous chemicals such as mercury, cadmium and arsenic.

The study, directed by the Environmental Health Project of the Ecology Center in Michigan, also found that jewelry products were the most likely to contain high levels of lead.  Which I am glad I learned about as my daughter often times trys to put my necklaces in her mouth while I am holding her.  Other items, such as bedroom slippers, bath toys and card-game cases were also tainted, some with as much as five times the standard safety level of lead. The light up shoes are made with mercury, so those may not be the best option for our little ones.
As we all remember, millions of toys, most of them made in China, have already been recalled in 2007.

Lead is supposedly banned for use in U.S. products marketed to children in 1978, but that doesn’t stop U.S. companies from importing lead-laced toys and selling them with fervor. Up to 80 percent of toys sold in the United States are manufactured in China.  So again use your money as your vote.  Support companies that share your values and that offer products that are safe and non-toxic.

There is a loophole in the ban that still allows lead to legally exist in your child’s toys -- even those made here in the United States -- and that is plastic.  Choosing plastics that are BPA free are a safer choice.  The use of lead in plastics has not been banned. Children's jelwery often tests high for lead, so be weary of plastic jelwery.  I personally buy wood toys as much as possilbe and limit costume jelwery for my dauther.

As children are well known for putting anything and everything into their mouths, their toys simply must be pure. Children are more susceptible to lead absorption than adults, and even low levels of lead exposure have been linked to:
    • Decreased intelligence
    • Impaired neurobehavioral development
    • Decreased stature and growth
    • Impaired hearing acuity
Other chemicals that may be lurking in children's toys and accesories are:
    • Mercury: A known neurotoxin that can harm your child’s developing brain.
    • Cadmium: A known carcinogenic. Long-term exposure to low levels of cadmium can contribute to kidney disease, lung damage and fragile bones, and animal studies also suggest that it may lead to liver disease, high blood pressure, and nerve or brain damage.
    • Arsenic: Long-term exposure to arsenic has been linked to cancer. Exposure to low levels of arsenic can cause nausea and vomiting, decreased production of red and white blood cells, abnormal heart rhythm, damage to blood vessels, and a sensation of "pins and needles" in hands and feet, and over the long term can cause darkening of the skin and the appearance of small "corns" or "warts" on the palms, soles, and torso.
    • Phthalates: Used in soft plastic toys and baby bottles, these chemicals can mimic or block sex hormones, causing disruption of your endocrine system and early puberty.
How to Find Safe Toys for Your Kids

The good thing about all of the media attention on this issue is that many parents are becoming very choosy about the toys they buy.  Secondly, more companies are trying to reap the financial benefit of this zest for safe toys so there are more options and places to buy these safer options.  This holiday season when you are looking for toys to buy as gifts, keep some of these tips in mind:
    • Seek out toy-making companies that still maintain quality and safety in their products. Be sure to ask questions about their toys, such as what types of chemicals are used in their production.
    • Look for organic and “green” environmentally friendly toys that use beeswax-based coatings, natural vegetable dyes and organic, chemical-free fabrics and materials (such as wool, cotton and bamboo).
    • Support companies that use third-party testing of their products for lead and other heavy metals.
    • Toys that are painted should always be labeled as having “lead-free paint,” but still avoid buying painted toys made outside of the United States or Europe.
    • Get creative. Books, sports equipment, music, and even cardboard boxes that can be turned into forts make great, safe alternatives to traditional “toys.
We may not be able to control what countries or every company does, but we can control where we spend our money!
  • How to choose a Supplement

In 2007, Americans spent about $34 Billion on Vitamins, Supplments and Herbs.  But how do we know which ones work, which ones are useless and which ones are not good for us?  Well, one of the best pieces of advice I can offer people is to know the difference between borrowed research and primary research.  And select supplements that have primary research.

Borrowed Science is research done of one thing, but then used to establish that another thing is would produce the same outcome because it has the original thing in it.  Most supplement companies use this type of research as grounds for why their products are good for us.  For example, vitamin E has its individual research dictating its usage. Vitamins B1 and B6 have their individual research. Putting these three substances together into one formula brings up the question; How is this formula going to effect the body?  Or we know oranges are good for us and they are a good source of Vitamin C.  When our product has Vitamin C and therefore is good for you too.

The research on an individual substance is given to the public stating that in combination vitamins E, B1, B6 will produce a desired effect, when in fact, unless specific Primary Research is done on the combination of nutrients the question remains: What is the effect? This is Borrowed Science. There is no scientific validation on the formula itself.

The second term is Primary Research. It is specific research on the very product that is being marketed, scientific validation and independent studies that show that both the company and the products are safe, trustworthy, and effective. The distinction between these two terms is critical, often demonstrating why a nutritional product works or not.

One of the cool things about the nutrition we get from nature is there are synergistic elements in all whole foods that depend on each other to produce functional foods, foods that produce specific effects in the body's metabolism. How can nutritional products be expected to work when a hodgepodge of nutrients and herbs are literally thrown together into one capsule? Claims on each specific nutrient may be valid, but together do they produce a known, healthy biological effect, or are too many assumptions being made (borrowed science)? Who knows? A product's effectiveness and safety are determined only if there is scientific validation on the whole product.

So look for supplemnets with Primary Research. And better yet, look for supplements that have clinical studies published in peer-reviewed scientific and medical journals.

And for moms, if you are giving your child a multi-vitamin or other supplement, please look at the label.  Make sure you never buy one that has colors, preservatives, or hydrogentated oils listed on the label.  These are terrible things for children and should be avoided.  It just amazes me that these companies will put that stuff in items that claim to be good for us!

Also, more and more research is coming out on the dangers of over-supplmenting.  So please take caution in the amounts and the supplements you take.  Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing in the cases listed below.

    Examples of potential harm:

—Isolated, synthetic Vitamin E can prolong bleeding time and has forced cancellation or delay of cancer surgeries; some studies suggest it may raise the risk of certain cancers.

—Vitamin A, may raise smokers' risk of developing lung cancer (Beta Carotene is safe).

—Folic acid supplements may raise the risk for precancerous growths in the colon.

—Vitamin C in large doses may help cancer cells resist chemo and radiation.

So, let's get to work and feed our kids and ourselves good, wholesome food!  Adults we need 7 to 13 servings of Fruits and Vegetables daily and our kids need about 5 to 7 minimum.  Any athletes or stressed out people, then you need more.  Check out your local health food store as you can't go wrong with most of the food they carry.  Make a smoothie once a day with a variety of frozen fruit and veggies.  Try to have at least two types of vegetables and two types of fruit with each meal.  And make your snacks apples, organges carrots, celery, bell pepper slices, raisins, appleauce, etc.  Feel like the kids won't try new things or eat anything other than mac'n cheese or chicken nuggets?  Well, don't despair keep trying to get your kids to eat the right things.  Don't give up after a few trys.  Their tastes may change or it just may take some time for them to get used to the new food.  Also, if we cut out some of the unhealthy snack items they are able to have during the day, they may be hungrier for the healthier food choices.

  • Clearing the Decks for Baby

With the theme for this month being "Postpartum Care", I wanted to share something that toke me three pregnancies to realize.  Even though I ususally offer advice or thoughts on nutrition, I thought I'd share this little insight as I think it is just as important for the health of you and your baby.  Once you bring home that sweet baby, there is very little that you can know for sure.  Will the baby latch or take a bottle easily, have colic, sleep well, be happy, be healthy, etc.?  But if you give yourself the time to handle all of this, then at least you are setting yourself up for a happy and enjoyable experience with your newborn.  And if you run into any problems adjusting to this new life, then you'll have the time and focus to deal with it best.

With my first baby, I had just finished moving cross country, finding a place to live and had to adjust to being a mom and not in the "working" world anymore.  With a husband who was gone 4 nights a week and me with no faces I had known before, I was stressed.  I often regret not taking that time and just being happy for what it was.  A wonderful time of bringing a new life into this world.  I couldn't get my head around the fact that I wasn't making any money, making any deals, having any meetings, coming up with ideas for clients, accomplishing tasks that instantly showed result.  Instead, I should have just been happy my beautiful daughter nursed well, had no allergies or colic, and for the most part was a really happy and good baby.

Then when my son came along, I still had a traveling husband and this time now a 2 year old.  I was just happy if I could eat 3 times a day!  Again we were moving so I had that fun to deal with, as well as the launch of my business.  So, his infancy seemed like it went by in a blink of an eye.  I often joke with my husband and say (with a regret) that I don't remember our son as a baby.

So, when our newest little one arrived, I toke the full 3 months off and I enjoy every moment with her.  I take time to play with her, cherish the fact that she always wants to be held.  Sit a bit longer to stare at her when I am nursing her.  Bring her everywhere and I never feel bad for doing so.  Her first year is almost over and I have no regrets.  I have enjoyed all of it with her.  I am not sure if I did so because there is a good chance she may be my last baby or if I've finally wisened up after seeing my first two grow up so fast.   Either way, when you think about postpartum care, just remember to think about not just enjoying that first year, but relishing it!  I could get more into the science behind why it is also important to really take time for you and your baby to bond that first year (I'll let Dr. Bill Sears one of my favorite pediatrician's do that for you in his Attachment Parenting book www.askdrsears.com), but strictly speaking from the emotional side...it is only 1 year and you'll never get it back.  And it is magical!   So enjoy mommies!!
